10th & Piedmont (Midtown Atlanta)

We sat down at our first visit to 10th and Piedmont, the old Outwrite location. We were seated at a perfectly situated table, and my co-diner said to me:

"Could this place get any gayer?"

I replied:

"Sure... there could be a drag queen in pink doing a pole dance."

Just then, I turned around and spotted a support pole in the middle of the room, so I thought, "the night is young." (

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus (Atlanta)

After my first time hearing the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus, I was absolutely blown away. So, I waited until the next time before I reviewed to make sure it wasn't an anomaly - you know, like Lindsay sober.

Last night's 2011 Holiday concert, based on a program made famous by Robert Shaw and impeccably led by Shaw-disciple Norman McKenzie, clinched it for me: this is one of the best cultural experiences in the city, hands down. It's also one of the finest choirs I've ever heard. (

Hot Springs Resort & Spa (Hot Springs, N.C.)

I don't want to beat up on a small-town stab at a spa, but this was just abysmal and unintentionally hilarious all the way around. The country-gravel driveway was an ominous precursor to a building that looked from a distance like an undressed doublewide - because it was, in fact, some sort of readybuilt trailer doubling as a hot-springs spa retreat.
